Segun was born into a very poor home. His family was very poor that even poor people call them poor.

His parents managed to send him to school. But other children were making jest of him because of his torn school uniforms. Another was that he was always the last person to pay his school fees. The payment usually comes after much beatings and humiliation.

On a particular day, he was sent home because of non payment of school fees. on his way back home, he saw a huge sum of money. He picked the money and took it to his father.

When his father saw the money, he told Segun that it was wrong for him to take what does not belong to him. Both of them walked back to the spot where he picked the money. On getting there, they saw a woman looking on the ground and searching for her money. They handed over the money to her and left.

Segun’s ordeal continued even after he was admitted into secondary school. One of the days, a teacher humiliated Segun because he couldn’t afford to buy exercise book for his assignment. Segun felt so bad that he decided to confront his father.

“Father, why did you give birth to me when you know that you are not ready for the responsibility of fathering a child. You cannot do even the simplest thing that a father can do for his child. No good house, no car, no money. Even food, we barely feed ourselves. You don’t have anything at all. Because of you, I am being humiliated every day in school,” Segun cried.

Segun’s father was shocked at his outburst, but he told him.

“My son, I’m sorry for the stress you have been going through. I accept responsibility for it. Though you are wrong to say that I don’t have anything. I have you. Having you is not a mean achievement. If I can have you, then I can also have any other thing I wish for. You were also wrong in saying that I can’t do a simple thing. God has helped me to do the hard job of training you to be upright. Be patient with your father, every other thing will fall in place.”

“Father I understand. I am not blaming you. The only thing is that you shouldn’t have given birth to a child. It is wrong to bring a child into this world if you cannot take care of him or her. That child will end up being a nuisance in the society. ”

His father patted his back and told him,”Son you are very intelligent but you are wrong in what you just said. What makes people became nuisance in the society is not based on the material things they don’t have. It is based on what they don’t have inside of them. Anyone that have the quality of good character cannot become a nuisance in the society. The people mocking you, are not doing so because you lack material things. Rather they are trying to suppress what is inside of you because it is intimidating them. Don’t allow them to succeed.”

After the discussion, Segun never allowed people’s mockery to disturb him anymore. He concentrated on his studies.

On a Monday in School, Segun saw a latest model of iphone on the ground. He knew the quality of the phone and how much it could fetch him. Instead of stealing the phone, he decided to take it to the principal’s office.

The commissioner of education visited the school. He didn’t know that his phone falled off his trouser’s pocket.
It was when Segun brought the phone that he discovered that his phone was missing. He was amazed that Segun never thought of stealing the phone.

“I never knew that a teenager like you can see such a phone and return it. Even when you don’t have a good school uniform and shoe. What made you return the phone?” The commissioner for education asked.

“Sir, my father told me that what make people misbehave is not the physical things that they lack. It is because they lack good character. I may not have good clothes and shoes, but I have character. I value it more than any material possession because it is my Selling point.”

The commissioner for education quickly sent for Segun’s parents.

“Where do you work” He asked Segun’s father.

“I work as a security personnel in our community health centre.”

“No! A man that gave this kind of gift to humanity deserves better. It is only when you have a good life that you will be able to give this boy a good life. You are getting a new job, an official car and a befitting accommodation. As for Segun’s education, leave it for me. I will take care of it.”

“Ah! Do I deserve all these? I don’t even have any qualification.” Segun’s father said in shock.

“You have more than enough qualification. You trained this boy to be upright, even in the midst of lack. If at this level, you can maintain such standard, then you deserve any level of promotion.”

Keep being good, Maintain your godly standard. Good behaviour will always pay, either sooner or later. You may not have all that you need now, but everything will surely fall into place.
