Uzoma’s mother died few days after giving birth to her. It was her father that raised her till she gained admission to secondary school at the age of 12.
Afterwards, he became sick and all efforts to cure him proved abortive. He finally succumbed to the cold hands of death.
Uzoma’s uncle branded her an evil child, claiming that she killed her parents. All the villagers supported him, though many of them knew that it was not possible for Uzoma to kill her parents. Yet, no one defended her.
Nobody gets close to Uzoma except her friend Akudo. She was smuggling food from their house to Uzoma so that she would not die of hunger.
When Akudo’s mother found out, she went to Uzoma’s house and gave her a thorough beating. Afterwards, she threatened to disown her daughter if she ever give food to Uzoma again.
Uzoma had to develop another means of survival. She picks palm kernel from the bush and sell in other to raise money for feeding.
Things continued like that until a team of evangelist came to the village. When they met Uzoma, they took her to the city. The general overseer adopted her and send her to school abroad.
Many years later, after Uzoma was already married, she decided to visit her village. She was shocked at the story she heard.
Her uncle had been the one perpetrating all the crime in the village. He poisoned Akudo’s food. It was at the point of seeking solution for Akudo’s ill health that the truth was discovered. Sadly, Akudo did not survive the food poisoning.
Akudo’s mother was heart broken because Akudo was her only child. She was sick but there was no one to help her. Uzoma made an arrangement to take her a hospital in the city and treated her. Afterwards, she employed someone to be taking care of her in the village. She also placed her on monthly salary.
Akudo’s mum kept apologizing for how she treated Uzoma in the past. But Uzoma told her to forget about that because it belongs to the past.
By tomorrow, If Akudo’s mother is to advise anyone, she will tell them not to treat people badly because of their present situation. For tomorrow can spring up positive surprises.
