Painful Wish (Episode 16)
Smith pushed me away and entered inside the room. I couldn’t understand what was going on. After a long while, I summoned courage to get close to him. That was when I discovered that he was weeping.
“My dear, what is the issue? Why are you crying?”
“I am not crying,” he lied, trying to wipe his eyes.
“Please tell me what the problem is,” I begged him.
“Are you aware that Olaedo is dead?” Smith asked.
“Oh no!” I shouted and pretended that I was crying.
“Linda hold it! It’s not yet time to cry. Something happened to me earlier today and it really spoilt my day. I was on that before I heard that Olaedo had died. I bent my head on my table to relax a bit. I was overpowered by sleep and I had a dream. Olaedo came to me and said that she loved me and will always love me. She told me that she never planned evil against me. She also told me that everything happening was planned and executed by you because of greediness. Finally she said that I and her cannot be together again.”
Fear gripped me but I managed be strong and maintained a straight face
“Did you believe that it was Olaedo’s spirit that was talking with you.” I asked him.
“I don’t believe that the dead speaks. But I think that it was a revelation.”
“There is nothing like that. There are some powers that want to separate us, but God will not allow it. Ours is a match made above. But till now, you have not told me why you were crying.” I demanded softly.
“The news of Olaedo’s death broke my heart. It is true that I am not supposed to have pity on her because of the atrocities she committed against me. But I don’t know why I find it difficult to let her go,” Smith explained.
“Don’t worry, it is normal. It’s just that we are good people. That is why we are crying for her death. After she tried to kill you and even told lies against me.”
“Away from Olaedo’s death, another thing happened.” Smith told me.
“What could that be,” I asked, wiping my eyes, even though there was no tears there.
” I lost my job,” Smith told me.
“What!”
“Don’t worry, it’s not a problem. I will sort myself out,” Smith assured me.
“What exactly happened?”
“My Managing Director is Olaedo’s relative. It was actually through him that I met Olaedo. Since this challenge started, he has been begging me to reconcile with Olaedo. I told him that I can’t, because my life was at stake. When he received the news that Olaedo died, he said that I was the one that killed her. Afterwards, I was served a sack letter.”
“Why would he do that? So he would have preferred that Olaedo killed you. He is a devil. I will advise that you sue him for relieving you off your job without prior notice.”
“I am not worried that I lost my job. With my experience, I can get any job I wish for. I am only concerned about Olaedo. If truly he wanted to elope with a lover, why would she die because I said I would not marry her again,” Smith wondered aloud.
“My dear, it’s like you don’t understand how evil people operate. She could have even killed herself just to prove that she was innocent. It may also be that the lover has disappointed her. You know how men behave.”
“I think you are right. You have answered all the questions in my mind.” Smith told me.
Smith started searching for a new job. It was not as easy as we expected. Even after four months, nothing positive happened. He woke me up one early morning to have a discussion with me.
“It’s been four months since I lost my job. The truth is that I don’t really have money with me anymore. You are aware that I recently renewed the house rent and fixed the car. All my efforts to get another job have proved abortive. I have to take the bulls by the horn. I talked to my friend and he invited me over. He wants to help me with some money to start a business.”
“Wow! That is nice. At least no one will be controlling you, when you have your own business.”
Smith left for his friend’s place. After a week, I didn’t see him and I became so worried. His phones were switched off and there was no way to reach him. He was yet to introduce me to any of his family members. So I don’t really know who to reach out to.
One evening, the door suddenly opened and a man that looked like Smith walked in.
“Good afternoon sir,” I greeted him.
“Good afternoon. Where are the owners of the house?”
“My husband is not around,” I told him.
“I’m sorry please, who is your husband? Is Smith not living here anymore?”
“Smith is living here. He is my husband.”
“What kind of joke is this? Please, can you tell me where my brother and his wife went to?” The man gasped in frustration.
” But I have told you that I am Smith’s wife. The only challenge is that I don’t know his whereabouts. He told me that he went to see a friend. It’s close to a week now, but I am yet to see him.”
“I don’t understand what you are talking about. What are you doing in this house? What happened to the occupants of the house?” The man asked again.
I was just looking at him. I didn’t know what to answer. He went to call one of the neighbours to come and identify me. This particular woman hated me. I don’t know how I offended her. I have tried to get close to her but she avoids me like a plague.
Whenever she sees me , she would start singing mockery songs. Immediately I saw her, I knew I was in for a trouble.
“Please, this the person I’m talking about. I met here and she said that she is my brother’s wife,” Smith’s brother told her.
“God forbid bad thing. I don’t know her. Your brother’s wife is Olaedo. Smith doesn’t have two wives. All of a sudden, I didn’t see your brother and his wife. When I came in to ask who she was, she chased me away and told me that this place is her home. I tried to call your brother and his wife’s phone, but it’s switched off,” she told Smith’s brother.
“Madam! Why are you telling lies against me?” I cried out.
“Shut up your mouth. You are witch!” she shouted at me.
She turned to Smith’s brother, “Be careful with her, she is a chameleon.”
“Where is my brother and his wife, I ask you for the last time.”
“My husband’s brother, please calm down let’s talk,” I pleaded.
“Who is your husband’s brother, you must be crazy. I will be back. By the time I’m done with you, you will regret ever stepping your feet into this home.”
I was a bit relieved when he left but I never knew what was in stock for me. He later came back for war.
