Mama Nonso had a shop in the compound where she lived. She was always around when Waste carriers came, so she helped to dispose of the waste of other neighbours.
She kept doing it but no one appreciated her for it.
On a particular day, one of the nighbours was around when the truck that disposes waste came. Mama Emeka decided to tell her to help in bringing the drum out.
“Mama Nonso please, I am busy. Don’t disturb me,”Linda snapped at her.
“What do you mean by you are busy? Don’t you dispose of your home waste in the drum?” Mama Emeka asked Linda.
“Everybody in the compound knows that you are the one that fills the drum with waste from your shop. Please don’t disturb me,” Linda told her.
Later in the evening, Mama Nonso decided to report the matter to other occupants of the building. Their response shows that they were in support of what Linda did. She decided to continue disposing of the waste without complaint.
She later got a shop in another place and moved her business. She also informed the caretaker of the house that she would no longer be dropping waste in the general drum for waste.
Whenever she was going to her shop, she carried her waste along and disposed of it there when the truck that carries waste comes.
Because she was no longer around, there was no one to help dispose of the compound waste. For a month , the waste was smelling. They decided to hold a meeting. As they were discussing how to handle the matter, Mama Nonso did not say anything.
After a while, she informed them that she wanted to go to her flat.
“Mama Nonso what is going on? You never gave any suggestions since we’ve been talking. Now you are saying you want to go. We know that you have stopped keeping your waste there, but we are still neighbours. You can help to suggest to us what to do, “Mr. Ene told her.
” I want to go because there is no issue here. You all agreed that the waste we used to have in this compound was from my business. Now I have moved the business to another place. It means we don’t have waste in the compound any more. The case is closed. Any day that a cunning man dies, it is a cunning man that will bury him.”
