I was in my workshop one morning when a young man came to me. He informed me that someone directed him to meet me. He had a car to sell. The car was fairly new. I counted myself lucky because the amount he was asking me to buy the car was very cheap. As I was discussing with the man, I never knew that Nedu was eavesdropping. All of a sudden he bashed into us and started questioning the man.

“Young man, I know you. You don’t own a car. How did you get the car you want to sell.”

The man was watching Nedu, wondering who invited him to the matter.

“Nedu what is your problem. Why are you an enemy of progress?”

“You called me an enemy of progress. No problem, I will show you what an enemy of progress is capable of doing.”
“You cannot do anything. You are just being jealous.”

Nedu walked out in anger.

“Please don’t mind him. He has mental problem. We are just managing him,” I said, in a bid to caution the effect of what Nedu has done.

“I am not bothered about him, I know his type of person. He is jobless.” The young man assured me.

I was so happy that the he did not allow Nedu to discourage him. We proceeded with the discussion. By the time we agreed on the price, I told him to produce the car documents.

“The document of the car is not with me. I used it to borrow money from someone. Now that person is threatening me that if I don’t produce the money today, he will seize the car. That is why I decided to sale the car. It is better for me to sell the car and make something out of it than to forfeit the car for him. If you can divide the amount into three places and give me 2 parts of the money, I will leave the car with you . If I repay him and retrieve the document, then you will pay me the balance.”

I was convinced by his story, so I ran around, borrowed some money and added the one I had, to complete the required amount. I was happy that I have bought a car. I never knew that I have landed myself into a big trouble.

Two days later, policemen came to our workshop to arrest me. I demanded to know what my offence was but no explanation was given to me . It was when I got to the Police station that they told me that I stole someone’s car. I tried to tell them how I got the car, they never believed my explanation. They threw me into cell and gave me a beating of my life. I wept all through. My challenge was my poor mother, I wondered what she would do if the news should get to her. God was faithful, when the information got to my uncle , he rushed down to the city. Through his intervention, I was released. My colleagues tried their best too. They contributed their own quota to ensure that I regained my freedom.

Immediately I resumed work, Nedu came to meet me.

“Iyk sorry for your ordeal. I was trying to warn you on the day that the young man came but you never listened to me. Thank God that you are back. I suggest that you go for medical checkup because of the beating they gave you. What do you think?”

I knew that Nedu was happy for everything that happened to me. Nelly told me everything he said. He even told them that he wished that I will die in police detention.

“Nedu listen to me. All your evil plans will not work. I know that you are the brain behind everything that happened to me. You planned and executed everything. You thought that I would die but my God is bigger, greater and higher than you and your native doctor. Let me warn you, steer clear of my path. The battle line has been drawn. Just be prepared it is either you kill me or I kill you. No two ways about it.”

He stood there watching me as if he does not know all the evil that he has committed. Other colleagues came around and tried to find out what the problem was.

“I don’t know what is wrong with him. I was only trying to sympathize with him. And he started talking rubbish.” Nedu told them , acting as if he was innocent.

“Please help me and beg Nedu to be careful of me. His cup is already full and running over. If he did not respect himself and leave me alone, I will make him to regret all his actions and inactions towards me,” I threatened.

“Look at this common criminal , Onye ohi motor.(car thief) Who are you threatening? Nedu mocked me.

I couldn’t take that so I rushed towards him but they held me.

“I want to advise that you leave Nedu alone and concentrate on your life. you are minding him so much and it is affecting you adversely” Ifeanyi; one of our colleagues advised me.

“It’s Nedu that has refused to leave me alone. He vowed that I will not drink water and drop the cup in peace. My name is always on his lips. Whenever I am not around, he would be talking about me. Why?”

“Iyk I think the major problem you have in this office is not Nedu. Your problem is Nelly. The earlier you stay away from Nelly, the better for you. He is the one feeding you with all these nonsense information. I am not saying that Nedu is an angel. The things you are accusing him of could be true. It could also be false. I noticed that Nedu does not like you. I don’t know his reason for that. But I have never heard him talk against you the way you do at his absence. Every misfortune that comes your way, you attribute it to Nedu. That is not right. Please face your life. If Nedu is truly against you, he will reap what he sowed. I however know that time will reveal every hidden thing.”
