Eric was relaxing as at home when he heard the ringing sound of his phone. She checked, and it was her mum.

“Hello! Iye.”

“Hello son. How are you doing?”

“I’m fine mum.”

“I have an urgent and very important issue to discuss with you”

“It’s okay ma.”

“It’s about the girl you brought to show me. You will not marry that girl.”

“Iye why did you you say that?” What do you have against her.”

“I don’t have anything against her. But my mind did not accept her. She is too beautiful, she is too respectful. The worst is that her parents are poor. Poverty blood runs in her . She cannot be my daughter in law.”

“Iye, if I tell you that I understand what you are talking about, I am telling lies.”

“My son, I will not deceive you. Most of these extremely beautiful girls have bad luck. Especially those that come from poor background. Whenever a man marries them, all the money he has will disappear. But if a poor man marries them, it becomes worse. Your wife is supposed to be your helper’. If you marry a poor girl, who will help you? Please my son, obey your mother and leave that girl.”

“Iye, I will not leave her. I will marry her. Start getting used to the fact that she is your daughter in law.”

Eric’s mum was very angry because of the way that her son treated her. She decided to report to her eldest daughter.

“Iye you have been fuming since you came here.. What is the issue.,” Ese asked.

“Who else, if not your brother? Eric felt that he has grown so big that he cannot listen to me”

“Iye, what exactly is the issue?”

“It’s concerning the girl that Eric brought that she wanted to marry. I told Eric that she cannot marry that girl, but she is insisting that he must marry her.”

“Iye please listen to me.The time that parents choose wives for their sons have passed. Please allow Eric to marry whoever she chose to marry. I don’t want this issue to cause problem between you and your only son. Eric brought that girl to me. She is not a bad person.”

“I didn’t say she is a bad person, my problem is that she is from a poor home. Eric does not need that kind of person. He needs a helper.”

” Iye please leave Eric alone. Money is good, but peace of mind is more important. Eric needs a woman that will give him peace of mind. Itohan is a good girl.”

“No problem. If you like her, then I will support the relationship. I don’t really have anything against her. It’s just that I wanted Eric to marry a working class lady. Another is that Itohan is too nice. I felt that she might be pretending. Though I know how to handle her if she misbehaves.”

“No I don’t think so. She Is a good person,” Ese assured her

Somewhere at Port Harcourt, Ada was passing through emotional torture.

“Hmm, so after all these years, Eric want to dump me. Eric want to dump Ada. Hmm! It will not work!”

“Ada you have to take things easy. All these assumptions might be false.” Jully cautioned.

“My dear, something is wrong somewhere. what are you telling me? This is a man that I have been with for years. If something is going wrong I should know,” Ada told her.

“Are you sure that he did not lost his phone,” Jully suggested.

“I don’t think so. I believe that Eric purposely blocked my line,” Ada insisted.

“Why would he do so?”

“Is it not obvious. He has possibly gotten someone better than me. After several abortions I had for Eric, he want to dump me.”

“Did you say abortions?” Jully asked in wonder.

” My dear, I have removed 5 babies for Eric,” Ada spilled.

“Is he aware?”

“Ofcourse, he was the one that encouraged me to do it . The last one nearly claimed my life”

“And you expect him to marry you? Let me tell you the truth. He will not marry you. Just forget about him,” Jully said firmly.

“What did you say? Eric will not marry who? He has already married me. What is remaining is our honey moon. Should we have a bet on it.”

Ada took permission from her office and travelled to Benin city. She didn’t know where Eric was living but she has the address of where her mother lives. Eric gave her the address when they were still dating in school.

When Ada met Eric’s mother, she greeted her very well and told her that she has a message for her.

“It’s alright, go ahead” Eric’s mum told her.

“My name is Ada. I am Eric’s girlfriend. I came from Port Harcourt to see you.”

Iye looked at her with a corner of her eyes.

“You mean that you came all the way from Port Harcourt to inform me that you are Eric’s girlfriend. You are still doing girl friend at this age, when your mates have stopped giving birth,” Iye mocked her.

“No ma. I am Eric’s fiancee. We are getting married. Infact, He promised to marry me,” Ada told her.

Iye busted out laughing.

“Are you the one that should come to tell me that Eric want to marry you? My son is supposed to come and introduce you to me.”

“You are right ma. He is the one that invited me to come. I will wait till when he comes.” Ada said while trying to relax very well on the chair.

“Where would you stay? Is it in my house?I was about going out before you came. You have to go and meet him in his house. This is not his house.” Iye told her.

“It’s okay ma. Please give me his house address.”

“Call him on phone and get the address,” Iye said firmly.

“My phone is switched off. Mummy please help me,” Ada begged on her knees.

“How did you get the address of this place?”

“Eric gave it to me.”

“Really, but he could not give you the address of where he is living. Now listen to me. Eric is not available. He has someone he want to marry. Even if he is available, he will not marry someone that has travelled from Onitsha to Aba.”

“Iye what did you just say. Eric want to abandon me after making me to commit abortion 5 times. It will never happen,” She spilled mistakenly.

Eric’s mum was shocked.

“Can you repeat what you just said” Iye urged her.

Ada kept mute.

“If you had come here to tell me that Eric impregnated you and does not want to take responsibility, then I will listen to you. But for you to tell me that a man impregnated you 5 times and you aborted all means that you are very useless. You did not even do only one, you did 1, 2,3,4 and 5.”

“Iye please stop. He was the one that made me do it. He said that he was not ready to father a child.”

“So after killing 5 of my grand children, you have the got to come to my house. Who showed you the way to my house?”

“Ma, please help me to beg Eric. I love him and want to marry him”

“Let me ask you a question, if you are Eric, will you marry you? Secondly if you are Eric’s mum, will you allow your son to marry someone like you?”

Ada kept quiet.

“Why are you not talking?. Listen to me . My son will not marry you. God will not allow you to ruin the life of my only son.”

“Iye please?” Ada begged in tears.

“I will repeat it again, since you are deaf. My son will not marry you,” Iye insisted.

“Really. If Eric did not marry me. You will cry over him. It is not a threat but a promise.” Ada sworn.

“You are threatening me in my house. Wait for me.”

Mama ran inside the kitchen to bring pestle. Before he came out, Ada ran away.
