Unworthy Ambassador (Episode 15)
“The interview went well but…”
“But what? Were you not successful? Or was it the pay package?” My boss cut in.
“It is far from that sir. I passed both the written and oral interview. Their pay package is good. Initially, the basic salary was N100,000. Later, the chairman increased mine to N150,000.”
“What was the problem then?” My boss asked as he steadied his gaze on me.
“The chairman of the company is the General Overseer of a church. He insisted that I must become a member of his church to be able to work with his company. But my decision is that I don’t want to leave my church. I am not saying that it is a sin for me to change church. However, if I must do that, it must be by God’s leading. My greatest challenge is that I don’t know the doctrine of that church. Truly I need to take care of my physical needs but my spiritual man needs to be nourished too. The church, where I am worshipping, is feeding me with the appropriate spiritual food. I don’t want to forgo my spiritual welfare in exchange of money. That is my fear.”
“Hmmm! Kingsley. Since you started working with me, I have been observing you. Each day, I see reasons to believe that there are still knees, which have not bowed unto Baal, and mouths which have not kissed him. The good news is that God don’t abandon such persons in their time of need. With this you’ve done, I want to assure you that your time of God’s visitation is near.”
My boss continued talking but my mind was no longer in what he was saying. From the time I entered my boss office, my younger brother had called my phone severally. The phone was in silent mode but I was seeing the calls. When my brother noticed I was not answering the phone calls, he sent me text message. I was eager to know why he has been calling my phone, so, I opened the text message. When I read the content of the message, I couldn’t control my emotions. Tears rushed out of my eyes.
“Kingsley what is the matter with you?” My boss inquired as he noticed that I was crying.
I could not utter any word so he got up and came over to where I was sitting. He noticed that my phone was on and concluded that I must have seen something on the phone which was making me to cry. He collected the phone and read through.
Dear brother Kingsley,
Don’t allow the four years I have spent in the University to be a waste. We are starting our final year examination a day after tomorrow but I’m yet to pay my fees. Please come to my aid. This is why I’ve been calling you.
“I’m so sorry sir. I didn’t mean to disrespect you. My brother has been calling my phone. When he sent the text message, I felt his reason for calling might be urgent. That is why I decided to read the message,” I managed to say.
“It’s alright. How much is your brother’s school fees?”
“It is N100,000.00 sir.”
There was silence for a while but boss was punching some texts or numbers in his phone. I couldn’t really tell exactly what he was doing.
“I have transferred the sum of N120,000.00 to your bank account. Send it to your brother. He should pay his fees and use the rest for his upkeep. It is a gift. In addition to that, you are getting a hundred percent increment in your salary.”
I fell on my knees in appreciation but my boss asked me to stand.
“Kingsley, you are good person so you deserve the best. From now, feel free to search for a better job. On my part, I will speak to my friends on your behalf. By the grace of God, your heart desires will be met. It is true that your departure will cost me a fortune. I believe that the God who brought you to me will give me another good person whenever he decides to lift you. You can go and continue with your duties.”
I left my boss office, singing and dancing. My colleagues were inquisitive to know why I was happy but I did not tell them.
