Unworthy Ambassador (Episode 19)
“Lawson, I didn’t know that you have taekwondo skills. I heard that you were using both hands and legs to dismantle and disorganize Justine.” Lawson was giving her sign to shut her mouth but she did not understand. He quickly picked his phone, acted like he was answering phone call and stepped out.
“What is she talking about?” I asked no one in particular. Instead of answering me, the girls, having read the hand writing on the wall, started announcing their departure one after the other.
“You don’t have to go. Come and round off the gossip,” Paul mocked.
Few minutes later, Lawson resurfaced in the company of my boss, Mr. Chukwukelu and his wife. They looked so worried and concerned. He asked if I was having problem with any one and I told him no. He further asked if I was suspecting any one for the attack and I gave the same answer. However, Lawson interjected and informed my boss that there was a suspect.
“Our church praise theme leader, Justine has been envious of him. What I am telling you now is an open secret in the church. He has done everything within his power to frustrate Kingsley. The only offence that Kingsley committed against him was that God blessed him with the talent of singing.”
“Really,” my boss said in a surprise tone
“Yes sir. It was this same young man that made me leave the church. His target has been for Kingsley to leave too.”
“Could it be that since Kingsley does not want to move by himself, the so called Justine decided to move him by all means?” my boss asked.
“Exactly, God bless you sir.” Lawson said with an air of triumph.
“Then I have to involve the police,” my boss said firmly.
I became uncomfortable with the turn the discussion was taking. Trying to find out the culprit or even dealing with the person was the least thing in my mind since the incident occurred. Though it was a painful experience, I knew that the battle was not mine. I had to find a way of convincing my boss not to involve the police.
“Please sir, leave the police out of this for now.
“When is the right time for the police to be involved? Is it when he kills you,” Lawson asked in agitation. My boss nodded his head in agreement with him.
“I will not die. My life is in the hand of God. If it were not so, I wouldn’t have survived the attack. It is true that all fingers are pointing at Justine; there is a slight chance that he might be innocent. If that becomes the case, will I be able to forgive myself? Even if he is guilty, I leave him for this God that I am serving who said that vengeance is his.”
“I think you are right,” My boss said. “Though if information gets to me that he disturbs you again, I will not take it lightly with him.
***********
I was discharged from the hospital on Monday morning. Pastor was around to settle the bills, after which his driver drove us home. I was so touched by Pastor’s care and humility. On getting home, Lawson who has been with me, excused himself to go and buy foodstuffs for me. I was left alone with Pastor.
“Daddy I want to appreciate you for everything you and the church have been doing for me. God will surely bless you.”
“You don’t have to thank me. All appreciation should be directed to God for preserving your life. God is the one at the center of it all. But then, you have served both God and humanity. You deserve everything we have done for you and even more.”
“Daddy you are right. God is the all in all. However your efforts cannot be undermined too. You have been a tool in the hand of God to favour me,” I insisted.
“It’s alright. Thank God that you are recovering, soonest you will become fully strong. In relation to that, do you think that someone was behind the attack?”
“Yes sir. I think so.”
“Further on that, do you suspect anyone in particular?”
“Hmm! Daddy, this is a difficult question. Since the incident happened, all fingers have been pointing in one direction. That is on Justine. This is because he has openly shown his hatred for me. But experience has taught me that people like him may not really have time to plan evil. If someone know that accusing fingers will be pointed at him concerning a particular crime, he will not want to commit such crime. I could be wrong anyway. However, I want God to be the judge.”
As I concluded my speech, Pastor heaved a sigh of relief.
“Son, your answer has lifted my spirit. Truly I heard the rumour. After yesterday’s church service, I summoned Justine to my office concerning the incident. He denied sending anyone to attack you. I have been so worried. Of course no good father will be happy when two of his children are fighting. I want to appreciate you, for your stand. Keep it up. The only one who will fight for you and you will have peace is God. We cannot really tell who the culprit is. But one thing is certain; every hidden thing will come to light one day.”
