I and Lawson tried in vain to calm Vera down. She continued weeping.

“Kingsley, please forgive me. I am so sorry,” She pleaded amidst sob.

I must confess that I was totally confused by Vera’s behavior. How could she badge into my house crying non-stop. Afterwards, she started asking for my forgiveness. I could not remember ever quarrelling with her. She had never insulted me. ‘What could she be talking about?’ I thought to myself.

I could not hold these thoughts to myself, so I decided to verbalize it.

“Vera, I don’t understand. Why are you asking for my forgiveness?”

Vera was silent for a while, after which she dropped the bombshell.

“I sent the boys that attacked you.”

“What!” Lawson exclaimed. “Imagine the evil you are vomiting from your mouth? So you were the devil? Yet you encouraged me to fight Justine. Did you not tell me that you overheard Justine saying, ‘if Kingsley does not move in one piece, he will move him in pieces’?”

“I am so sorry. I never knew what I was doing. Now, I have repented,” Vera said in tears.

“You have repented indeed. Just thank your God. If it was when I was Law the hit man, I would have crippled you. So, you don’t move around laying evil eggs.”

All the while Lawson was ranting, I had been in shock. Later, I found my voice.

“Vera, why did you send those boys to attack me? How did I offend you?”

She responded with a shaky voice. “I sent them because I was angry with you. That day that I wanted to spend the night in your house and you threatened to report to Pastor, I felt insulted. I never wanted to strike while the iron was hot so that I won’t be suspected. It was because of that incident that I decided to deal with you. Moreover, I knew that if I execute my plan, all fingers would point at Justine.”

“This is unbelievable,” Lawson exclaimed. “Simply because he decided to maintain his stand as a child of God, you sent assassins after him. You even had the gut to come to the hospital. And to add salt to the injury, you prepared poison and brought in the name of food. To think that I was the one that ate that food is hurting. You are lucky, if that your poisoned food had affected me, I would have dealt with you!”

‘If the poison had affected you, will you deal with her from the grave? Can you be serious for once?’ I thought to myself. The seriousness of the issue at hand could not allow me to vocalize it.

Vera quickly reacted to the accusation. “No—oo, I did not ask them to kill him. I just wanted them to beat him. When I saw that the beating landed him to the hospital, my conscience started disturbing me. That was why I came to the hospital.”

“You think you are talking to a fool? “ Lawson asked her. “The truth is that you don’t have a conscience. The drama that you acted in that hospital clearly indicates that. Anyway, why are you making this confession?”

“The boys that did the job are trying to blackmail me.”

“No wonder. I know that something must be after you . if not, you will not confess.” Lawson told her.

“They have dealt with me. I have spent huge sums of money, yet they kept asking for more. They threatened to reveal the secret if I don’t give them more money. I had no choice than to come and confess. Those boys have kept me in bondage for so long, I need my freedom. Kingsley, please forgive me in the name of our Lord,” She pleaded, looking at me with a tears socked face.

“I have already forgiven a long time ago. Even though I didn’t know the perpetrators of the crime, I had no choice than to forgive them; for my own good. The best person you should confess to should be Pastor because he is your spiritual father. However I strongly advise that you surrender your life to Jesus Christ and stop playing church. Remember what the bible said in the book of 2 Timothy 2:19.”
